Progress towards 0.0.3 and 0.0.4


Wow, it's already been a month since the project launched, and I'm so touched by how nice everyone's been! Thank you all so much for the interest! Since it's going to be a little while until the next version (and longer until the next demo) I thought I'd write a bit of a progress report to give an idea where things are at.

In the interest of not falling into the trap of focusing only on one gameplay element and making it harder on myself to integrate things together, v0.0.3 is going to be focusing on starting to set up the structure for things other than the character creation. This means a ton of refactoring, lotsa code and node work overall, making/improvising new ui elements. What it also means is "no new content", more or less, because the only asset work I'm going to be doing is to make the current portrait options available for the little sprites as well.

More specifically, the plans for 0.0.3 are roughly as follows:

  • make all the sprite assets that correspond to the current portrait assets (~30% done)
  • refactor all the code/nodes so that systems actually work together (~50% done)
  • rough out a simple tileset and map to put the sprites in (~50% done)
  • set up a working simple dialogue box (~80% done)
  • set up structure for basic interactions (done)
  • make all necessary ui elements (in progress)
  • link character creation to map so that you can open the map with your character (not started)

So, with that, v0.0.3 is not going to be available as a public demo because there basically wouldn't anything new to demo over v0.0.2 and I don't really want to disappoint people or lead them on. On the other hand, this frees up v0.0.4 to be nothing but content, where I'll be both tweaking existing assets and creating new ones (as well as some new option categories) as well as offering a couple basic interactions on the ingame map.

Also, as mentioned in previous logs, I'm still planning on writing up 2-3 guides on how I've been doing things so far (especially on the CC side), but I have to finish some of the refactoring for 0.0.3 first since the code required a lot of clean-up (and I needed to know how the map-side things worked before I could do said clean-up correctly), so expect those sometime between 0.0.3 and 0.0.4!
